Seatbelts Everyone!

Published February 26th, 2020

Welcome to our First lesson at Sliver Academia, My name is Tuxebromask, and today, we will be studying The First Sliver Deck (AKA: Ms. Frizzle’s Finest First Form Fundamentals Featuring Ferocious, Fun-Filled Friends Focusing Face). When the First Sliver was spoiled, Commander players relived the horror of facing Slivers once more, and boy, is this a Sliver who has quite the powerful ability tacked onto it.

Our focus in this deck is to set up some absurd plays with our Slivers, and using their Cascading goodness to create a board state, with cards to help you keep the board as well. This version tends to use more Slivers than most Sliver decks, as you want to Cascade into your important cards quickly and then keep hitting Sliver after Sliver to keep this field trip through your deck going!

Truly, this deck can be tuned more so with more Tutors such as Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Sylvan Tutor, etc… But this is my personal blend of the deck. The tutors which put a creature on top of the deck works beautifully in line with The First Sliver, as they can hit a guaranteed Cascade into another Cascade.

Also the Mana Base can be tuned down a bit using Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse with more Basic Lands and also Tap Lands, but if you have fetches, why not use them!

Ramp & Rocks

Making sure you ramp is important, and my usual go to are the Slivers Gemhide and Manaweft if I can find them in the opening hands. They can be removed, but the colour fixing and technical ramp using other creatures helps this deck start on the right foot. I usually will add Kodama’s Reach and Cultivate, as fixing my colours and getting my guaranteed next turn’s land drop is always a plus.

Top Deck Manipulation

These right here are golden just having around, but while Ms. Frizzle is out, they become an insane trip! Congregation at Dawn especially works well as you can get your combo on top of your deck to create very strong plays, even wheeling everyone’s hand, balancing the board, or drawing 3 cards by having the 3rd card you put on top a 1-drop Sliver. Each effect is pretty strong for a Sliver Deck for its own reason, using Restore Balance on the board is a bit iffy, but with the opponents I go up against I need the help wiping away their 15+ Zombies they made with Field of the Dead. Special Shout outs to Pulmonic Sliver, for you being able to create all the chains at the top of your deck if your board gets wiped!

Protection

In this deck, I don’t run counterspells, but that is usually because of the board states this deck can create which come out super quickly. If you feel you need some due to your playgroup, its always nice to have, and can make you a bit more political instead of burst players to 0. I find that making yourself and your permanents untargetable works fine, with Heroic Intervention giving your things a much needed indestructible / hexproof for when things get dicey.

Combos / Stacking Fun!

Note: I only run 1 6-cost Sliver (Fury Sliver) due to the rarity of being able to play more than 1 6-drop in a game, as usually I play Ms.Frizzle, then play a 3-4 cost sliver and get good returns from it. You may use Megantic Sliver if you prefer the +3/+3 instead, as there is the Double Strike you can cascade into with Bonescythe Sliver instead of Fury Sliver.

If we have the mana, and the stacking, here are some examples of what we can do if Ms.Frizzle sticks to the board and we have mana in our pools.

Fury Sliver > Sliver Hivelord > Shifting Sliver > Blur Sliver > Sinew Sliver > Virulent Sliver > 0-cost spell = Which creates Double Striking, Indestructible, Pseudo-Unblockable, Hasty, Poisonous Slivers, with a +1/+1 effect for slivers, so that’s a combined power of 18 without the double strike. With the 0 cost spell you could hit you potentially hit the Suspend spells and get card draw with Ancestral Vision, Wheel of Fate your hand, or Restore Balance to the board among other things. If you have more things you want to play in your hand, snag a Gemhide Sliver or a Manaweft Sliver with the help of the Blur Sliver and start tapping them for mana.

Summary

There are a lot of things which you can do, but usually you have to see what the boardstate is like and decide what you want to do from there. If there are dangerous artifacts and enchantments, you might want a Harmonic Sliver instead. Need life? Essence Sliver. Need to steal creatures? Sliver Overlord into an Amoeboid Changeling. The fun goes on, and it’s potentially yours to play out as you deem fit!

I’ve definitely seen what sort of wizardry Ms. Frizzle can come up with, and how fun it is when you are able to decide what gets cascaded into. She’s got a good amount of fun things you can do with synergies everywhere, and plus you are able to put in whichever Slivers you like and want to see more of, as every Sliver deserves to see the light of day… Except for you Plague Sliver… you can sit this one out…

I hope you enjoyed this deck tech, and I will be going through the other Legendary Slivers and sharing my finds for them. Please send a comment if there is anything you would like to see in the next deck tech, or if you have any comments about this one.
